Creating a new crate

Creating a new crate is easy and you can create a new one anywhere in your inventory.

Setup and info

Start by navigating to the browse page.

When creating a crate, your current place in the inventory, will be used as the location for the new crate.

Meaning that if I for example want to add a new crate inside of "Arbeidsbenk", I would need to first click on the arbeidsbenk element to navigate inside, before clicking the "New crate" button.

For this demonstration, we will just create a new crate in the root of our inventory.

Now we create

Click the "New crate" button in the bottom right corner.

New crate button

This will open the crate creation wizard.

Step 1: Selecting purpose of crate

There are no different types of crates in Skapersøk, they all share the same properties and functionality. This is one of the biggest advantages of the system.

But if you had to choose every property of a crate, it would be a lot unnecesarry work, instead we let you choose a purpose for the crate in the first step of the creation wizard.

This will not limit your crate, just make the creation quicker.

There are two options to choose from:

  1. I plan to put other items inside this crate [YES] (default)
  2. I do not plan to put other items inside this crate [NO]

This is just as simple as it sounds, if you plan to put other items inside the crate, choose YES, if not, choose NO.

For example if you are adding a drawer, you will probatly put stuff inside of it, so choose YES. If you are adding a box of cabels, you'll probatly not put any other crates inside, so choose NO.

Step 2: Select name

Give your crate a name, this will be the name that is displayed in the inventory.

Step 3: Description and keywords

Add some description and keywords to your crate, this will make it easier to find in the inventory.

Skapersøk search uses both name, keywords and description.

Step 4: Placementcode

The placementcode is a unique code that is used to make navigation inside the inventory easier. The placement code is built from one or more segments separated by hyphens. Each segment is a label for one level in the hierarchy. Meaning that the placementcode of a crate is built like this:

[Placementcode of the parent crate] + - + [level-unique code for this crate]

Together that forms a unique placementcode for this crate.

For example: We have a crate called "Arbeidsbenk" with the placementcode A. Inside we have a crate called "Skuff 1" with a level unique code of 1, this means that the placementcode of "Skuff 1" will be A-1.

If we now put another crate inside "Skuff 1" called "Cabels" with a level unique code of CA, the placementcode of "Cabels" will be A-1-CA.

Step 4: Icon

Select an icon for your crate, this will be the icon that is displayed in the inventory.

Step 5: Marking crate position

Now we need to mark the position of the crate on the parent map image, the map image of the crate that this one is inside.

Use the controls to draw lines around its position.

Step 6: Children arrangement

Children, meaning the crates inside this crate, can be arranged in different ways. You can choose between a free arrangement or a grid arrangement.

The map image is used by crates inside this crate to displaying their location when searched for. The map image can be a floorplan, a map or a photo of the area/object.

Just show the entire area/object that is your crate, so that the items inside can draw their own location on the map image.

There is no step 6 for this crate, since it will not have any children.

Last step: Review and create

Review the information you have entered for your crate, and if everything looks good, click the "Create crate" button to create your new crate.
